Education: From How to Live → How to Make a Living → How to Survive
Education is about change again for the next generation
In ancient times, education was holistic.
It was about how to live.
After the Industrial Revolution, education morphed into how to make a living.
With the AI revolution, education is turning into how to survive in a capitalistic economy.
1. Ancient Education:Learning How to Live
In ancient India, education was imparted through the Gurukula system.
A Gurukula was a traditional residential model where students lived and learned with their teacher.
It was often located in forests.
Students learned to live with nature in a sustainable way.
Education was holistic.
It focused on developing the whole human being, not just academic ability.
Students learned many aspects of life, including but not limited to:
Breathing
Meditation
Diet
Economics
Ethics
Justice
Philosophy
Architecture
Medicine
Art of war
Statecraft
Metaphysics
Religion
Education was not preparation for a job.
It was preparation for life.
2. Industrial Education: Learning How to Make a Living
The Industrial Revolution reshaped education to serve factories and offices.
Schools began to resemble factories.
The ringing bell signaled the start and end of work, just like a factory shift.
Children sat in classrooms for 8 hours.
They learned standardized skills.
They were conditioned to fit into industrial systems.
In Britain, schools increasingly emphasized practical and trade skills to support industry, administration, and strengthen national defence during WWII.
Later, education evolved again, preparing people to work in offices, technology, and professional environments.
Education became a pathway to employment.
A mechanism for economic productivity.
3. Intelligence Revolution:Learning How to Survive
The Intelligence Revolution driven by Artificial Intelligence will reshape education once more.
The next generation must learn how to:
Use artificial intelligence to amplify natural intelligence, adapt continuously and create value in a fast changing economy
Education will become a survival toolkit for navigating a capitalistic system.
The hope is simple:
AI will reduce the time required to make a living
And increase the time available to learn how to live in school and work
Personal Reflection
I have spent much of my life learning based on industrial education and making a living in foreign lands, inside a capitalistic economy.
Now, I have the privilege of spending time and resources to learn how to live they way my anacestors lived in India.
Living is breathing.
You stop living when breathing stops.Learning to live is learning to breathe.
Recently, I signed up for classes to learn how to breathe.
Better late than never.
Life has come full circle.Life is full of contradictions.
Whoever said it was easy.
Take it easy until next time.
